* PrEP is up to 99% effective if taken as prescribed.
PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis) is a once-a-day single blue pill which prevents HIV infection by protecting cells from the HIV virus (often sold under the brand names Truvada and Descovy). Many college-age students should consider PrEP for the prevention of HIV. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), young people accounted for 21% of all new HIV diagnoses in 2018.
Possible candidates for PrEP are people who are at risk of getting HIV and weigh at least 77 pounds. This is not just a medication for gay cis-identified males - this medication can protect all people who may be at risk for contracting HIV. While PrEP is highly effective for HIV prevention, PrEP does not protect against other sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
