Intekhab Alam, distinguished teaching professor of marketing in ʹڲַ's School of Business, has won a highly competitive 2025–26  award for Oman for Fall 2025. Alam will work with the College of Economics and Political Science at Sultan Qaboos University in the capital city of Muscat. Collaborating with educators and researchers, he will explore marketing financial services aligned with religious and cultural beliefs to minority and refugee customers.

Alam’s award is the second for the 2025–26 cycle, following that of Thomas Osburn, associate professor of physics, who won a scholar award to Ireland. Alam’s grant brings to 38 the number of Fulbright or Fulbright-Hayes awards ʹڲַ faculty members have received.

The Fulbright Foundation annually offers 400+ awards in more than 130 countries for college and university faculty, artists, and professionals from a wide range of fields to teach, conduct research, and carry out professional projects around the world.

“Disseminating my research findings and their implications will contribute to the advancement of knowledge and support informed decision-making in the financial services marketing and emerging technology sectors of Oman,” Alam says. “I also hope that my research will benefit stakeholders globally—particularly refugees and minority customers who have settled in Rochester, NY—by fostering caring communities that offer financial services and other products aligned with their religious and cultural beliefs.”

Alam hopes building enduring connections with Sultan Qaboos University personnel will lead to cross-cultural student projects and co-authored scholarly publications. He plans to integrate the insights, global perspectives, and intercultural experiences he gains through the Fulbright experience into his teaching, curriculum development, and departmental services. “The knowledge transfer and global exposure made possible by this program will ultimately contribute to a more inclusive, innovative, and outward-facing academic environment,” he says.

Alam earned a bachelor’s degree in business from the University of Calcutta, India, and an MBA from Aligarh Muslim University, India, before earning a Master of Business in marketing by research from Queensland University of Technology, Australia. He earned a doctorate in marketing from the University of Southern Queensland, Australia.

In 2022, Alam was awarded the rank of Distinguished Teaching Professor, one of the highest honors awarded by SUNY. Over the years, he has received several teaching and research awards, including the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching and the National Meritorious Teaching Award. His scholarly contributions have also been recognized with ʹڲַ business school’s Business Advisory Council Outstanding Scholarship and Research Award, as well as the Positive Societal Impact in Research Award.
